Jonathan Hargreaves

Jonathan was awarded an MEng in Engineering & Computing Science from the University of Oxford in 2000 and a PhD in Acoustic Engineering from the University of Salford in 2007, where he remains as a post-doctoral Research Fellow. The title of his PhD thesis was “Time Domain Boundary Element Methods for Room Acoustics” and this remains one of his active research areas. At present he is Researcher Co-Investigator on an EPSRC funded project in partnership with the University of Reading, Arup Acoustics and BBC Audio R&D. This aims to develop improved acoustic modelling software, which properly includes wave phenomena, and couple it to audio hardware, enabling the sound of buildings to be experienced before they are constructed or long after they are lost. Jonathan has had the pleasure of being involved in a wide variety of public engagement activities, including a number of TV appearances, and is passionate about performing, engineering and enjoying live music.

Seminar: Acousto-optic sensing of acoustic fields

Wed 16th March 13:00 – 14:00. This seminar will be held on Teams and shown in in Newton G14. Abstract The characterization of sound fields over space is fundamental in acoustics. Yet, the acquisition of sound fields using conventional electromechanical transducers is challenging due to the high sampling requirements. In this study, we introduce an […]

Seminar: Modelling the Perception of Percussive Low Frequency Instruments in Rooms

Wed 9th March 13:00 – 14:00 This seminar will be streamed via Teams – click here to join. Abstract The effects of room modes on audio reproduction are well reported and researched, however a considerable amount of work typically focuses on smaller acoustic environments, such as listening rooms and control rooms. Larger listening spaces, such […]

Seminar: Sabine and his organ pipes – the dawn of room acoustics

Wed 23rd Feb 13:00 – 14:00 The seminar will take place in Newton building room 233, and will also be streamed via Teams. Afterwards, there will be an opportunity to experience the experiment in our small reverberation chamber (subject to demand). Abstract In 1898 Sabine’s first method was published in the Proceedings of the American […]

Seminar: Designing a Synthesiser to Elicit a Feeling of Perceived Tension

Wed 16th Feb 12:00 – 13:00 Join via Teams Connor Welham, PhD Student, Acoustics Research Centre, Salford Tension: That unnerving and stimulating feeling you get when watching a scary movie or riding a rollercoaster. The short, sharp shock felt when an apparition jumps out from behind the camera. The uncomfortable sense present when a piece […]

Seminar: Hearing, Touch – the Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response (ASMR)

On Wed 8th December we have Clau Nader from the University of York coming to talk to us about her research on the Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response (ASMR). Please note the later than usual start time of 14:30. Click here to join the meeting Abstract An experience known as Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response (ASMR) is […]
