Abstract:

In modern research, efficient version control and collaboration tools are essential for managing code and data. GitHub has become a cornerstone platform for researchers and developers, offering a robust infrastructure for version control, team collaboration, and community engagement. As a centralized hub for storing, managing, and sharing code repositories, GitHub facilitates seamless collaboration across teams, encourages open-source contributions, and supports community-driven development.

This seminar provides an introduction to Git and GitHub. Participants will learn how to use Git for version control, track changes in code and data, and collaborate effectively using GitHub. Key topics will include setting up repositories, branching workflows, and sharing research projects openly. The session will also emphasize best practices for managing data and dissemination, structuring research repositories, and ensuring that the same code used in research is accessible to enhance reproducibility. By the end of the seminar, participants will be equipped with practical skills to streamline their research workflows, foster collaboration, and contribute to the broader goals of research transparency and reproducibility.

Biography:

Dr. Gerardo Roa Dabike is a postdoctoral researcher in the Acoustic Department at the University of Salford, working on the Cadenza project. His research specializes in signal processing and deep learning applied to music, particularly for individuals with hearing loss. As part of the Cadenza team, he collaborates in designing challenges to address the various difficulties people with hearing loss experience with music. Dr. Roa Dabike is responsible for collecting datasets, implementing baseline models, and disseminating these challenges, with GitHub serving as a core tool for collaboration and sharing.

Dr. Roa Dabike has also conducted workshops on using version control systems and GitHub for academic research, helping researchers streamline their workflows and enhance team collaboration. Passionate about the intersection of technology and research, he is committed to promoting best practices for data management and dissemination within the academic community.
