Abstract:
Urban soundscape represents a research area still in development, with gaps, such as influences on human responses and practical applications. The thesis aimed to observe the relationships between urban soundscape perceptions and emotional states. In different urban sites, natural scenaries and water features may indicate positive responses to the sonic environment, which can give support to good sound design practices. Methods involved subjective self-reports and Electroencephalogram (EEG) observations when exposed to real binaural audio and 3D video soundscape stimuli reproduced in virtual reality (VR) via internet and laboratory experiments. The benefits include alternative solutions for environmental noise issues, improvements in public health, quality of life, and cultural heritage.
