The national survey of CAMHS inpatient services, part of a three-year University of Salford project in partnership with NAPICU, is examining the current landscape of children and young people’s inpatient mental health care across England and Wales. The survey is being carried out because evidence on CAMHS inpatient care is limited, with major gaps in national data. The findings of the survey will help to provide a clearer picture of service structure, staffing, pathways, challenges, and good practice.

To make it easier to complete, the survey is divided into two waves. An invitation email for wave 1 of the survey was sent out to all eligible services on 28/05/2026. The participation of all CYP inpatient services across England and Wales is imperative to getting a national picture. Young people from the research study’s advisory group explain why they think the research is important and how they have contributed to its development. If you are a staff member in one of the services that has been asked to complete the survey, and you would like to take part, you can read more about the research in the participant information sheet.

For any questions about the research, please contact j.c.hunter@edu.salford.ac.uk ; c.m.foster@salford.ac.uk or camhslandscapestudy@salford.ac.uk

The results of the survey will be published gradually to maximise impact of research findings in helping to inform policy and further research. Findings from the research will be published on the website’s outputs page.
