Interview Information
As part of the HEAL research we will be interviewing NHS clinicians in the Northern Care Alliance (NCA) Trust to understand more about their training experiences, digital training needs and their relationship with digital technologies in the workplace and at home.
Currently we are looking for participants to take part in an interview lasting up to one hour who work in the following areas of clinical practice in the NCA:
- Registered Nurses in any specialism
- Clinicians in the Neurology specialty

Thank you for your interest in taking part in this study on digital skills and digital training solutions in the NHS. This sheet lays out some information about the project to help you decide if you would like to take part.
What is this research about?
The purpose of this study is to build a picture of the current situation around digital training provisions and the needs of NHS nurses and neurology staff around digital training. We are seeking to understand your current usage of, and attitudes towards, digital training alongside any challenges you experience around digital training. You will also be asked about your confidence around digital skills and technology. The findings from this study will contribute to understandings of digital learning solutions and their suitability in NHS training.
Why have I been invited to take part?
You have been selected to take part in this study because you are a nurse or a member of neurology staff and we are interested in discovering your experiences and opinions around digital training. We would like to capture perceptions and experiences related to digital technologies to inform training design and support that meets the variety of needs.
What will happen if I do take part?
If you choose to take part in this study you will be interviewed by the researcher in an informal interview. This interview can take place on Microsoft Teams (you will be provided with a link and will not need to have Microsoft teams downloaded to participate) or if you prefer a face-to-face interview this can also be arranged in a suitable location. The interview is expected to take no more than 1 hour of your time and will be audio recorded, however as soon as the audio is transcribed the recording will be deleted.
Any answers you give will be anonymised and no one will be able to attribute your answers back to you outside of the research team at the University of Salford.
Do I have to take part?
It is up to you to decide, participation is not compulsory. We will describe the study and go through the information sheet which we will give to you. We will then ask you to complete a consent form to show that you have agreed to take part. You are free to withdraw at any time, without giving a reason. If you change your mind after participating you have a period of one month after interviews before your answers are analysed where we will be able to remove your responses and delete your audio recording. If you withdraw, any personal details we hold about you that were used to arrange your interview will be kept safely until the end of the project in case we need communication with you in future.
How will my information be used?
We will need to use information from you for this research project. This information will include some of your demographic details. People will use this information to do the research or to check your research data to make sure that the research is being done properly. We will keep all information about you safe and secure. Transcription of the focus group may be done by an independent organisation, however they will not have access to your name or contact details and a confidentiality agreement will be in place in this case.
People who do not need to know who you are will not be able to see your name or contact details. Your data will have a code number instead. Your answers will not be identifiable in any report or publication or be seen by anyone you work with.
Once we have finished the study, we will keep some of the data so we can check the results. We will write our reports in a way that no-one can work out that you took part in the study. This anonymous information will be kept for a minimum of 5 years after the study has ended. If you agree to take part in this study, you will have the option to take part in future research using your data saved from this study.

You can find out more about how we use your information by asking one of the research team via the details provided at the end of this participant information sheet or by sending an email to the University of Salford’s Data Protection Manager at foi@salford.ac.uk and informing them that you are part of the HEAL project by PI Cristina Vasilica.
What are the possible disadvantages and risks of taking part?
There should not be any disadvantages or risks from you taking part. However, if you do experience any unexpected distress, we recommend you check https://people.nhs.uk/ or https://www.mind.org.uk/ for further support. These services will also be linked on the last page of the survey.
What are the possible benefits of taking part?
We cannot promise the study will help you directly, but the information we get from the study will help further develop digital training solutions for NHS staff like you. The hope is that these can improve satisfaction and aid in solving any challenges you experience in this area. We are a university and so it is part of our reason for being that we advance knowledge through research as well as through teaching. Your participation in this research helps us to do that.
