Dissemination key principles

The audience

Who is the primary audience? Engage with them early in the project and regularly throughout. Remember to consider how to disseminate to the people who participated in your research. It is important that if you have asked people to participate, that they can see what they have been part of.

Dissemination plan

Ensure the team have met to discuss possibilities for most effective dissemination and develop a plan to take this forward. Identify critical timepoints and consider external influences.

Format

Ensure the targeted outputs are in the right format and tailored towards the audience.

Language

Use plain English, suitable for an international audience.

Mode of dissemination

Consider the most appropriate and impactful mode of dissemination. The 3Ps (poster, presentation, paper) are the most common ways to do this, but other methods can also be considered, for example podcasts.

Networking

Use existing opportunities such as conferences where you can establish contacts and raise the awareness of your research.

Context

Have a good understanding of the service context and always consider if you can share findings earlier.

Feedback

Remember to give feedback findings to the team, participants, service users and encourage their participation.

Dissemination formats

Video

Record your presentation using either software available on PC, smartphone or university resources, upload to dedicated video sharing platform (YouTube, Vimeo) and share via social media channels.

Pecha Kucha

An interactive storytelling format in which a presenter shows 20 slides for 20 seconds of commentary each (20 x 20). At Pecha Kucha Night, individuals gather at a venue to share personal presentations about their work.

Traditional Media

Use your organisations communications team to share your work via their media outlets.

Liaise with your manager to get approval and identify target outlets.

Creative Content (Social Media)

Creative content (e.g. zines, infographics, animations) can bridge the gap between the workplace and the broader community, making research more accessible, engaging, and impactful.
