No Second Night Out and Gate Buddies

An evaluation for Riverside English Churches Housing Group

No Second Night Out Salford (NSNOS) was set up in January 2014 as part of a nationwide response to the Coalition Government’s Strategy to end rough sleeping: Vision to end rough sleeping: No Second Night Out Nationwide (DCLG, 2011). Based within the Sash project, a local hostel, the NSNOS service offered temporary accommodation for up to ten NSNO referrals made via the centralised hub in Greater Manchester (NSNO GM). In addition to NSNOS, another Riverside ECHG funded project, Gate Buddies (GB), was introduced in January 2014. This innovative service targeted specific support towards prison leavers prior to or at the point of release. The two services worked closely together, and with other local organisations, to provide a range of support for homeless individuals across Salford.

In October 2014, Riverside ECHG commissioned SHUSU to carry out a rapid evaluation of NSNOS and the Gate Buddies (GB). The evaluation was undertaken by reviewing the following data sources:

• Existing secondary data relating to NSNO GM, the SASH Project and GB;
• Interviews with eight key stakeholders;
• Interviews with NSNO representatives;
• Interviews with four GB representatives; and
• Interviews with ten service users.

The project completed in February 2015.
