Psychologically informed physiotherapy for chronic neck pain

As part of our commitment to improving quality of life for people with long-term musculoskeletal conditions, we have developed a psychologically informed protocol and accompanying intervention booklet for one-to-one physiotherapy targeting chronic neck pain. This work builds on clinical experience, pain guidelines and our research into pain mechanisms and integrates behavioural science with clinical rehabilitation for this condition,.

Based up on group pain management programmes, the intervention is designed to address both physical and psychological contributors to chronic neck pain. It combines education, relaxation techniques, pacing, exercise and goal setting to help individuals self-manage their pain. Delivered over five structured sessions, the protocol includes tailored home practice supported by an illustrated booklet and digital resources.

Developed and tested through a Chartered Society of Physiotherapy Charitable Trust funded trial, the approach has demonstrated acceptability and potential for meaningful improvements in neck pain and daily function. This work reflects our broader aim to embed evidence-based, digitally supported rehabilitation into routine care, with real-world impact for patients, clinicians, and policy makers.
