CYP Potential MSc Projects
Theme 1: Optimising outcomes in paediatric acute, emergency, and critical care
MSc student projects:
- Long-stay children in the paediatric critical care unit: parental expectations with care compared to professionals’ views: a collective case study design (Lyvonne Tume)
- How do the three paediatric nutrition risk scores (PYMS, STRONGKids, and BCH) work in a critically ill paediatric population? (Lyvonne Tume)
- Lab based simulation study of gastric residual volume accuracy with different gastric tube and syringe sizes (Lyvonne Tume and Scientist)
- Promoting a more therapeutic environment by noise and light reduction in the PICU (Lyvonne Tume)
- Examining nurse-decision-making around sedation boluses and delirium in the PICU (Lyvonne Tume)
- Clinical nurses’ use of EBP in critical care (Lyvonne Tume)
- Evaluating the perceived and observable benefits of sensory spaces in children’s emergency departments (Andrew Rowland)
- Music in children’s emergency departments: what effects does this have on anxiety or experiences (of patients, carers, parents or NHS people)? (Andrew Rowland)
Theme 2: Improving CYP mental health outcomes
We will support any projects that fall within the topics listed below or you may have your own project idea that you may want to discuss with us. The CYP mental health researchers work closely with all of the themes in the CYP research group, as mental health is a cross cutting theme through all domains of children’s health and wellbeing. If you have an idea related to any of the other themes, but which has a mental health outcome focus, we will be really pleased to talk to you about this.

- e.g., Testing usability of developing digital interventions using participatory design (Celeste Foster and Daniela Ghio)
- Feasibility study to train nurses to deliver a brief psychosocial intervention for adolescents with depression (Eunice Ayodeji)
- Feasibility study to train nurses to deliver a problem focused behaviour intervention programme for adolescents with low mood and decreased levels of motivation as a consequence of remote learning during the Coronavirus situation (Eunice Ayodeji)
- Investigating the impact of Racism on Child and adolescent development and wellbeing (Eunice Ayodeji)
- Investigating factors that affect CYP Mental Health
- e.g., Investigating the effects of COVID-19 on adolescent’s development and its relationship to mental wellbeing (Eve Allen, Celeste Foster)
- e.g., Impact of acculturation on CYP’s mental health (Sue McAndrew)
Theme 4: Child empowerment and advocacy centre
MSc student projects:
- Determining the impact of children’s specialist services at M’Lop Tapang, Cambodia: medical team, education team, child protection team, vocational training programme, ChildSafe hotline, futures employment services, social work team, special needs team, dental team, arts and music team (Andrew Rowland)
- From Cambodia to the UK: lessons to be learned from work in South East Asia that can be translated to be suitable to consider in the UK (Andrew Rowland)
