Patient perspectives of CMT
A central part of ongoing reserach into Cognitive Muscular TherapyTM (CMT), is to explore patient’s perspectives of this new treatment approach. This work is typically undertaken by a qualitative researcher who interviews patients after they have completed the treatment. Patient feedback so far has been almost universally positive. They report that CMT allows them to understand and challenge the way they move and react to pain. They also describe the learning process as allowing them to “create a new normal”, to be “in control of their own treatment” and to feel like they are addressing the “cause not the symptoms.”
Patients really like the use of animated videos and muscle biofeedback, and report that this provides them with a completely new level of understanding of their body. This understanding enables them to “reset expectations” about their knee pain and give them a new feeling of “responsibility” for their condition. Patients often report that CMT has both a psychological and physical impact and this can positively impact other areas of their life.
