Muscle biofeedback and animated videos
EMG biofeedback: A central part of Cognitive Muscular TherapyTM (CMT) is the use of muscle sensors which provide real-time feedback on the level of activation in the quadriceps. These sensors are matchbox sized and connect via Bluetooth, and this allows muscle activation to be visualised on a computer screen. Muscle biofeedback is integrated throughout the treatment and enables patients to improve awareness of muscle contraction and to appreciate the links between postural control and overactivity of the knee muscles. It also provides validation for the role of muscle activity in knee pain.
Animated instructional videos: To facilitate patient learning, CMT incorporates the use of animated instructional videos to explain concepts related to pain and biomechanical theory. Some of these videos are watched in clinical sessions while the EMG biofeedback sensors are placed. Other videos are used to guide home practice and are provided via an online learning platform. This allows patients to review information after each clinical session. The videos are typically 1-2 minutes long and include a voice over with animated content. Follow these links to watch example videos which explain mechanisms underlying knee pain and how abdominal tension can affect breathing.
In addition to the videos which support intervention delivery, there is a longer video which provides patients with an overview of what to expect from the treatment. This video is shown below
