Hazel Price’s recent research in collaboration with the UK House of Lords is now available. The chapter ‘Respeaking as a Form of Intralingual Translation: Intersections between linguistics and respeaking in the live subtitling of parliamentary debates‘ was published last month with Routledge.

The chapter reports on a collaborative project between linguists, a subtitler and the Editor of Debates for the UK House of Lords. Whilst originally provided for d/Deaf, deafened and hard-of-hearing audience members, live subtitles are increasingly used by a far wider audience. In the chapter, Hazel and her co-authors discuss how we might provide as similar an experience as possible to the original programme to those accessing the programme through subtitles, e.g. via including extra linguistic information, like pitch and prosody. They also address how linguistics can be used to improve the efficiency of the subtitling process.
