Salford will be well represented at the 21st conference of the Asociación Española de Estudios Irlandeses (Spanish Association for Irish Studies) at the University of Valencia. Three papers have been accepted – from Reader in Twentieth and Twenty-First Century Literature Dr Caroline Magennis and two PhD students, Elsie Unsworth and Katie Barnes. Caroline will present from her work on childless Irish women in the twenty-first century, Elsie will explore contemporary folkloric writing and Katie will examine fiction which directly engages with the spectre of institutional abuse. Later in the summer, Caroline and Katie will present at the European Federation for Associations and Centres of Irish Studies at Queen’s University, Belfast – Caroline will discuss the depiction of the body in Irish life writing and Katie will consider fiction by award-winning novelist Anne Enright. Katie has also been elected to the Council of the British Association for Irish Studies, the main organisation for promoting this field of study on this island.
