Participant information sheet (chronic knee pain) – v1 (05-02-25)
You are being invited to add your name to a register of people with chronic knee pain who are interested in being involved in research carried out at the School of Health and Society at the University of Salford. Before you decide whether to put your name on the register, it is important for you to understand what this will involve and how your information will be used.
What is the purpose of the register? Academics from the School of Health and Society are always looking for people with chronic knee pain to take part in their research. To help us to contact potential volunteers, we have established a register of people who have expressed an interest in our work.
You have been invited because you are taking part in, or have recently taken part in, a research project or have responded to an advertisement for people interested in volunteering. To be included in the register you must be aged 18 years or over and willing to provide information about yourself and your condition which will be held on the register.
Do I have to join the register? No. It is entirely up to you. If you decide to join the register now you can withdraw at any time and without giving a reason.
What information are you asking for? We will only ask for information which is relevant for our research. This will include name, age, weight, height and contact details along with details of your ongoing chronic knee pain.
What will happen to my information if I decide to join the register? If you are happy to join the registry, you will need to complete a consent form along with a health proforma (either via online form or via paper copy). If completing by post, please return the forms to us in the prepaid envelope that we provide. Once we receive your details (via post of online form), we will add you to our database.
Members of academic staff who wish to use volunteers in a study will first need to obtain ethical approval for their study. Once they have this approval, they will provide their requirements to the administrator of the register who will search for people who are suitable. The contact details of these suitable people will then be passed to the researcher who will send each (suitable) person an invitation pack with details of the study. This invitation pack will include the ethical approval reference number to confirm that the study has full approval from the University of Salford. If you are contacted in this way, you do not have to take part if you do not want to.
If you join the register, we will contact you every 6-12 months with a newsletter which will give information about new research into chronic knee pain. At the end of this newsletter, we will provide contact details for you of the database manager who you can contact if you no longer wish to remain on our register. If you do make this decision, then we will remove all of your personal details from our records. We will not keep your information on record indefinitely. After 5 years, we will contact you individually to understand if you still want to be on the register. If you do, we will ask you to complete the consent form and health pro forma again. If we do not hear from you, we will remove all of your information from our system.
If you wish to see what information about you is held on the register, please contact the Register Manager at the address below.
Will my details be kept confidential? Yes. All information on the register will be kept strictly confidential and stored securely. Only a very limited number of administrators will have access to the register, and they will ensure that the details you have provided are kept confidential and not passed on to others. The register and all other information are held on the University’s electronic systems which has rigorous security and backup provision to protect your information. No paper copies of the information you provide will be stored.
Who is managing and overseeing the register? The register is managed by the University of Salford, which the School of Health and Society is a part of. The register and its procedures have been reviewed and approved by the Research Ethics Committee and Data Protection Officers. The University Health Sciences nominated custodian Stephen Preece is responsible for ensuring the Register is managed in accordance with the University Data Protection Policy.
What if I am unhappy or need more information? If you have any concerns or complaints please contact the Register Manager, Jennifer Parker on J.Parker17@salford.ac.uk. If you do make contact, please explain that your details are stored on the chronic knee pain database.
