{"id":1990,"date":"2022-01-05T14:54:44","date_gmt":"2022-01-05T14:54:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/hub.salford.ac.uk\/sirc-materials-and-physics\/?page_id=1990"},"modified":"2022-01-05T15:03:05","modified_gmt":"2022-01-05T15:03:05","slug":"facilities-diamond-anvil-cell-apparatus","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/hub.salford.ac.uk\/sirc-materials-and-physics\/facilities-diamond-anvil-cell-apparatus\/","title":{"rendered":"Facilities: Diamond anvil cell apparatus"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Our <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Diamond_anvil_cell\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">diamond anvil cell<\/a> (DAC) high pressure facilities are amongst the best in the UK.&nbsp; We have a number of DACs custom-constructed to our own designs, primarily for optical spectroscopy and X-ray powder diffraction at temperatures from ambient temperature up to 1000 K.&nbsp; Our DACs are equipped with diamond culets up to 1 mm diameter for accurate pressure control at (relatively speaking) low pressures up to about 5 GPa (50 kbar), and also with bevelled diamonds with culet side down to 0.1 mm to obtain extremely high static pressures (165 GPa, 1.65 megabar).&nbsp; High temperatures up to 1000 K are obtained using resistive heating with feedback to ensure temperature stability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hub.salford.ac.uk\/sirc-materials-and-physics\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/161\/2022\/01\/HT-DAC.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1991\" width=\"326\" height=\"326\" srcset=\"https:\/\/hub.salford.ac.uk\/sirc-materials-and-physics\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/161\/2022\/01\/HT-DAC.png 802w, https:\/\/hub.salford.ac.uk\/sirc-materials-and-physics\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/161\/2022\/01\/HT-DAC-300x300.png 300w, https:\/\/hub.salford.ac.uk\/sirc-materials-and-physics\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/161\/2022\/01\/HT-DAC-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/hub.salford.ac.uk\/sirc-materials-and-physics\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/161\/2022\/01\/HT-DAC-768x768.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 326px) 100vw, 326px\" \/><figcaption>High temperature diamond anvil cell. Photo credit: Dean Smith<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>We have facilities for reliable cryogenic loading of diamond anvil cells (for samples such as methane which are gaseous at ambient conditions), and a <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1063\/1.5050500\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">custom-constructed spark eroder<\/a> (electric discharge) machine for preparing the sample chambers in rhenium and stainless steel gaskets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since the diamond anvil cell high pressure facility was established in 2013 data obtained using the equipment (either from Raman scattering in-house, electrical resistivity measurements at other laboratories or X-ray diffraction at central facilities) have contributed to a large number of research publications.&nbsp;
