Abstract:

Among the autistic population, there are longstanding personal reports of atypical speech perception; yet empirical evidence is inconsistent, generally based on underpowered studies, disparate methods, and hypotheses unguided by autistic experience. The SPAACE Project is a collaboration between auditory researchers, autism researchers, and autistic researchers that aims to shed new light on autistic speech perception. It seeks to progress systematically from autistic self-report through to well-powered quantitative research, informed at every stage by autistic experience and insight. This presentation will outline the project’s approach and the results of two initial self-report studies, as well as highlighting research priorities and clinical implications.
