How are you spending your summer…researching?

By Mar.08, 2010

How are you plaining to do during this summer?

This is probably the most popular season for holidays. PhD students, however, usually use this time to keep working on their research…

Do research students ever take a break until they go through their Viva? I doubt it!

But sometimes it is important to get away from our usual research environment and experience something different, without entirely needing to shift our focus from our research. Doctoral Summer Schools and related programmes can be a great way of achieve that. From past experiences, I know that such programme can offer interesting opportunities to learn, but also to meet other like-minded people, and more importantly, as far as I can tell, to establish connections with people who are going through the same process as we. Finding people who we can relate to and who in return are threading the same PhD road can be quite interesting. Furthermore, it can be a start of a new partnership, a collaborative paper, etc…who knows?

I must say, that having taken part in one of these Doctoral programmes, I can testify that they do add meaning to our experience as research students.

So here is a short list of events happening this year and which you can still apply for. Most of them offer scholarships and grants, which always make our participation much easier.

The following Doctoral summer programmes offer opportunities in several disciplines. Hopefully one of them will be of interest to you.

I have ordered them by the application deadline date, rather than discipline, because they are all in different areas. If you know of any other programmes, please do share them here.
