{"id":1266,"date":"2023-10-20T12:32:31","date_gmt":"2023-10-20T12:32:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/hub.salford.ac.uk\/modern-salford\/?p=1266"},"modified":"2023-10-17T12:42:01","modified_gmt":"2023-10-17T12:42:01","slug":"all-hail-the-donkey-stone","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hub.salford.ac.uk\/modern-salford\/2023\/10\/20\/all-hail-the-donkey-stone\/","title":{"rendered":"All hail the donkey stone!"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>We are fascinated by the lost tradition of \u2018donkey stoning\u2019 and want to find a donkey stone to exhibit in our final project exhibition in Spring 2024.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2018Donkey stoning\u2019 was the process of applying a wetted &#8216;donkey stone&#8217; to the surface of front door steps, window sills and flags to help clean and enhance their appearance.  It was common practice in the 19th and 20th centuries and was a chore more often than not performed by women and children.  The image, typically of a woman, \u2018donkey stoning\u2019 the doorstep of her terraced house is one which has cropped up regularly during our research for the Modern Backdrop project.  There is a thought the practice <a href=\"https:\/\/www.intameside.co.uk\/news\/eli-whalleys-donkey-stones\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.intameside.co.uk\/news\/eli-whalleys-donkey-stones\">originated in textile mills <\/a>where they were used to provide a non-slip surface on greasy stone staircases.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"319\" height=\"209\" src=\"https:\/\/hub.salford.ac.uk\/modern-salford\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/222\/2023\/10\/cleaningthedoorstep-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1270\" srcset=\"https:\/\/hub.salford.ac.uk\/modern-salford\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/222\/2023\/10\/cleaningthedoorstep-1.jpg 319w, https:\/\/hub.salford.ac.uk\/modern-salford\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/222\/2023\/10\/cleaningthedoorstep-1-300x197.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 319px) 100vw, 319px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">A woman cleaning a door step.  From a private photographic collection.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Donkey stones were the size of a soap bar, made from a mixture of crushed sandstone, cement, bleach and pigment, although the exact make up could change depending on the manufacturer.  People often got their donkey stones from the local Rag and Bone Man in exchange for old items.  Donkey stones took their name from the image of a donkey used by the largest 19th century manufacturer, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gracesguide.co.uk\/Edward_Read_and_Son\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.gracesguide.co.uk\/Edward_Read_and_Son\">Edward Read &amp; Son of Manchester<\/a>.  <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pittdixon.go-plus.net\/donkey-stones\/donkey-stones.htm\">Eli Whalley and Co<\/a>, based in Ashton-under-Lyne, are reported to have been the last manufacturer of donkey stones, until the company\u2019s closure in 1979.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"405\" height=\"500\" src=\"https:\/\/hub.salford.ac.uk\/modern-salford\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/222\/2023\/10\/8c32a1c8d0ffc230a2e1560d61688e96.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1268\" srcset=\"https:\/\/hub.salford.ac.uk\/modern-salford\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/222\/2023\/10\/8c32a1c8d0ffc230a2e1560d61688e96.jpg 405w, https:\/\/hub.salford.ac.uk\/modern-salford\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/222\/2023\/10\/8c32a1c8d0ffc230a2e1560d61688e96-259x320.jpg 259w, https:\/\/hub.salford.ac.uk\/modern-salford\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/222\/2023\/10\/8c32a1c8d0ffc230a2e1560d61688e96-243x300.jpg 243w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 405px) 100vw, 405px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">A back-entry thought to be in the Cross Lane area.
