{"id":1245,"date":"2023-09-18T09:48:21","date_gmt":"2023-09-18T09:48:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/hub.salford.ac.uk\/modern-salford\/?p=1245"},"modified":"2023-09-18T09:48:25","modified_gmt":"2023-09-18T09:48:25","slug":"have-we-found-bella","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hub.salford.ac.uk\/modern-salford\/2023\/09\/18\/have-we-found-bella\/","title":{"rendered":"Have we found Bella?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The \u2018knocker-up\u2019 has really captivated us here at the Modern Backdrop HQ.\u00a0 In this weeks\u2019 blog post we are coming back to share our progress in trying to identify who this person was in Salford during the middle of the last century.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When we first posted about the \u2018knocker-up\u2019 in <a href=\"https:\/\/hub.salford.ac.uk\/modern-salford\/2022\/04\/12\/double-ipsum\/\">April<\/a> this year, we posted a picture which we found in the Walter Greenwood Collection.\u00a0 The photograph was taken of a &#8216;knocker-up\u2019 in Moss Side, Manchester, and not Salford where Greenwood grew up and set his most known and highly successful novel, <em>Love on the Dole<\/em>.\u00a0 It is unlikely the \u2018knocker-up\u2019 working in Moss Side was the same one waking up the mill and factory workers of Salford!\u00a0 Looking at the other photos in the archive, I think this one has been kept as a visual example of the life and times Greenwood described in his novel and his autobiography, <em>There Was a Time <\/em>published in 1967 \u2013 presumably because a photo of a \u2018knocker-up\u2019 in Salford couldn\u2019t be found at the time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When we first shared the Moss Side image, we asked people whether they knew the identity of the &#8216;knocker-up&#8217; for Salford.\u00a0 We got a few comments and suggestions through Facebook.\u00a0 Jack Shaw commented that the \u2018knocker-up\u2019 at his wife\u2019s home in Gibson Street in Pendleton was called Bella Locket.\u00a0 We trawled through the photos on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.salford.photos\/\">Digital Salford<\/a> and found this image, which was used on a postcard sent from a boy to his mother in Belfast around 1908.
