Sole Mates: The Microbes That Keep Your Feet Happy
Recent research by the biomedical research team at the University of Salford has shown that the microbes that live on your feet may play a role in helping foot wounds heal.
This is a collaborative project between the biomedical research team and the foot health research group. As part of this, two microbiology students, Tom and Sienna, are working on the Podiatry clinic collecting microbes from the foot skin of our patients (from under their nails, between their toes and collecting foot-prints on agar to grow a bacterial and fungal footprint). The results of this study are being shared live here (including pictures of the foot prints): https://solematesproject2025.wordpress.com/
We hope that this project will tell us more about how the microbes on the foot skin can keep our skin healthy, and help our patients think more about how they care for their feet.
