Hidden Young People in Salford

With so little known about the lived experience of young people in Salford who were Not in Employment, Education or Training (NEET) but also ‘hidden’ from mainstream services, this project aimed to provide an empirically informed understanding of their diverse experiences to inform future policy and practice. It addressed the following interconnected objectives:
- To establish what is currently known about Salford’s ‘Hidden NEET’ population;To explore ‘Hidden NEETs’’ experiences, prospects and aspirations;
- To provide an understanding of whether or not ‘Hidden NEETs’ would benefit from more engagement with the mainstream welfare system, and how they could be supported to do so (including by both national and local policy); and
- To identify barriers to accessing mainstream welfare support and services (and ways to address these).
- To explore the financial and social impact of hidden young people who are NEET within the wider household.
- To deliver the project, a partnership was been created between the University, SCC and GMCVO (including funding/resources provided by SCC and the GMCVO), and various recommendation have already been taken up by key stakeholders.
