Improving image quality and lesion detection in breast imaging

Mammography is the only imaging modality that is dedicated to a single organ, this is due to the high level of image quality that is required to visualise breast tissue and pathology.

The work undertaken at the University of Salford focusses on measuring and improving image quality and pathology detection in breast imaging. This can take many forms, from optimising the image acquisition process and the resultant image, to developing novel techniques for measuring detectability and developing artificial intelligence systems to improve and assist detection. There are 2 current PhD students undertaking work in this area, A.I. in breast arterial calcifications, and optimisation for imaging women with dense breast tissue.
