Even though it is one of the most prevalent neurodevelopmental conditions, health services, professional training and access to diagnosis remain limited. This blog provides an overview for practitioners and academics of the current understanding, diagnosis, and support of FASD, highlighting the compelling need for improvement within the sector.

So, What Exactly is FASD?

Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) is a lifelong neurodevelopmental condition caused by alcohol exposure during prenatal development, leading to a range of differences in how people’s brains work. FASD affects children’s emotions, social understanding, memory and learning by changing brain development. A small number of individuals with FASD display facial features associated with the condition, meaning that it is often a ‘hidden disability’. Despite not having any physical signs of the condition, many individuals will find day-to-day life more difficult than others would expect.

Without receiving appropriate support, FASD may affect friendships, school progress, and independence. For professionals working in healthcare, education, and social care settings, understanding these patterns is important for providing the right kind of help and support.

Prevalence and Under-Recognition

The UK is estimated to have one of the highest rates of prenatal alcohol exposure globally; however, FASD continues to be under-identified, with alcohol exposure during pregnancy occurring in roughly 41% of cases in the UK. This has led researchers to estimate that around 3.2% of children in the UK have FASD. Whilst these figures provide a useful beginning point for understanding the scale of need, the number of people diagnosed with FASD remains much lower than the true number of people with the condition. These gaps highlight the challenge for practitioners across the UK, whilst FASD remains exceptionally under-recognised and under-supported. FASD is often mistaken for other neurodevelopmental disorders such as ADHD and autism, leaving families searching for answers. Despite being more common than autism, it still lacks screening, service provision and data collection in the UK.

Barriers to Diagnosis

Although FASD is not a recent discovery, the UK only published its first diagnostic guideline in 2019. A limited number of FASD specialists exist, leaving many families in the dark, with little support. However, Scotland has made major advances in guidelines and training, but England has yet to follow in their footsteps.

What Helps?

Despite FASD being incurable, there are support systems that can make a huge difference to people’s lives, such as parenting programmes, schools’ awareness and consistent routines. Earlier trials, such as the GoFAR intervention, improved children’s daily living skills and regulation. However, research on interventions like this is limited in number, under-researched within the UK and is not widely accessible to professionals and families, who often still feel like they would benefit from further support. It is important for academics and practitioners that there is an expansion in evidence and training, so individuals receive proper support across the UK.

What’s Happening Now?

The positive news is that progress is being made. Researchers at the University of Salford are responsible for the first “active case-ascertainment” study of FASD in the UK, which involves going into schools and assessing at-risk children for FASD as a way to estimate the true number of cases. They are also in the process of developing support programmes for families impacted by FASD. Scotland is continuing to improve the national guidelines, and new public health campaigns are evolving across the UK.

For families to receive the help they deserve, the UK requires an increase in training, consistency in diagnosis and further research. An increase in understanding and support means that individuals with FASD have the opportunity to thrive.

Click here to read the full paper.

Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) is a lifelong neurodevelopmental condition that is massively under-recognised across the United Kingdom.
