The aim of this work is to build a strong, up-to-date evidence base that can inform how CAMHS inpatient service delivery can be improved nationally. This study forms the first stage in that process.

Before you decide whether you would like to take part, it is important that you understand why the research is being done and what it will involve. Please take time to read this information carefully. If anything is not clear or if you would like more information, please get in contact with Janine Hunter or Dr Celeste Foster. Contact details are available at the end of this document.

What is the purpose of the study?

CAMHS inpatient services play a crucial role in the care of young people with serious and complex mental health needs, however there is limited evidence on how different CAMHS services operate and how they could be improved. This makes it difficult for policies to fully support effective practice.

As a first step to address this we have developed a national survey to capture current practices, challenges, and priority needs across CAMHS inpatient settings in England and Wales. The survey was developed using input from a wide range of stakeholders (including clinicians, commissioners, carers, young people with lived experience of CAMHS Inpatient Services, representatives of professional organisations, academic institutions, and service providers) to ensure the survey results in meaningful, rights-based outcomes.

This national survey consists of two waves.
Wave 1 (this survey) collects core information about your ward’s organisation, staffing, clinical activity, therapeutic approaches, and service model.

Wave 2 (to be sent separately) will focus on education provision, pharmacology, and a patient census. Your participation in both waves is extremely valuable for producing a complete and accurate national dataset.

It is important to note that this is not an audit. We are not assessing your service against any policies or guidelines or making judgements about quality. Our goal is to map out the current landscape of CAMHS inpatient provision. We ask for your honest responses, and the survey will be anonymised prior to any analysis.

Anonymity:

As the survey will be delivered in two waves, we ask for your unit and ward name solely to enable us to match your responses across both waves. This information will be stored securely and will be permanently deleted immediately after the datasets have been linked. Beyond this matching process, your responses will remain completely anonymous.

Why have I been invited to take part?

You have been invited to take part because your service lies within England and Wales. We are trying to understand how different services operate, what challenges they face, and the priority needs across England and Wales. Your perspectives will help us build an accurate picture of current practice. Your input will contribute to research aimed at improving CAMHS inpatient services, not evaluating or auditing your specific service.

Do I have to take part?

No, it is up to you to decide whether to take part. If you decide not to take part we will respect your decision. You may decline to take part or withdraw at any time up until the point at which data from Wave 1 and Wave 2 are matched and unit identifiers are removed (the last date for withdrawal of consent on wave 1 is 30th September 2026). After this stage, the data will be fully anonymised, and it will no longer be possible to identify or withdraw individual contributions from the dataset.

The survey has been designed in collaboration with practitioners and young people, ensuring that equality, inclusivity, and cultural sensitivity are maintained throughout. However, should you find that any question feels uncomfortable, culturally sensitive, or appears to rely on stereotypes or assumptions, you are free to proceed without responding to the question. You may decline to answer any question at any time without needing to provide a reason. If you wish to bring it to the awareness of the researcher, please email: J.C.Hunter@edu.salford.ac.uk

What Will I Be Asked to Do?

Consent to Participate

By clicking “Begin Survey” you confirm that:

you have read and understood the Participant Information Sheet.

you understand that your participation is voluntary.

you may skip any question or stop at any point.

you understand that your responses will be anonymised and used for research purposes only.

you consent to take part in this study.

If you consent to take part, you will be asked to:

Complete the survey. This survey is intentionally broad in scope, and we recognise it may be time-consuming.
