Donal O’Donoghue Renal Research Centre
The Donal O’Donoghue Renal Research Centre (DRRC) is based in the Northern Care Alliance NHS Foundation Trust and honours the legacy of our late colleague Professor Donal O’Donoghue OBE continuing his work to improve diagnosis, care and treatment for kidney patients. The centre is directed by Professor Phil Kalra a longstanding colleague and friend to the late Professor O’Donoghue. The centre reflects Donal’s organisation and comprehensive vision through 15 current research themes, collaborative work with local universities and other research organisations and ambitions to bring more colleagues into the world of research (including non-medical colleagues, such as nurses, pharmacists and allied health professionals). Research themes include service redesign in multiple long-term conditions as well as building on current expertise in chronic kidney disease, renovascular disease, glomerulonephritis, dialysis, transplantation and more.
The centre has recently developed a PPI group to support all research activities and strengthen the voice of people with lived experiences to underpin the ethos and culture of inclusive research.
Professor Helen Hurst from the University of Salford is the Clinical Academic Consultant Nurse.
