Using a Decolonial Health Check Tool to Address the Racially Minoritised Award Gap
The aim of this project is to tackle the racially minoritized Award Gap in our subject group (Sociology, Criminology, and Social Policy). The current data shows a 27.8% racially minoritised award gap in Health and Society in 2021/22 (university average is 13.8%), a 28% Award Gap in Sociology and Criminology, and 40% in Social Policy. We are proposing the creation of a decolonial health check tool to address the coloniality of curriculums as one way of tackling the racially minoritized Award Gap. The tool is being co-created with students through a series of focus groups. We hope the tool will allow programme and module leaders to identify areas of improvement that will enhance the learning experience, sense of worth and belonging, and degree outcomes for racially minoritized students.
