We are delighted to report that postgraduate researcher Alex Herod has just published her first academic article in the journal Studies in the Fantastic. The piece is entitled ‘Survival and Recovery: Addiction and the Therapeutic Potential of Horror Writing.’

The publication came about from Alex’s presentation at the Horror Studies Now conference at Northumbria University in May 2024 – her first ever academic conference paper. Alex was subsequently awarded the Inaugural Peter Hutchings Award for Outstanding Contribution to Horror Studies – which recognises innovative contributions to the field. Alex will receive her award at this May’s Horror Studies conference in Northumbria.

As a result of this recognition, Alex was invited to expand on her paper and submit it to the journal Studies in the Fantastic (University of Tampa, editor Sarah Juliet Lauro), in which it has been published in a special issue entitled ‘Tales of the Fantastic’.

Congratulations to Alex on her successes – all within the first year of her registration on the PhD Creative Writing programme!

Please see below for a link to the special issue (Alex’s article is available via the University of Salford library collection) and a picture of Alex demonstrating her horror credentials!
