{"id":265,"date":"2017-01-05T14:31:07","date_gmt":"2017-01-05T14:31:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/hub.salford.ac.uk\/accessibleaudio\/?page_id=265"},"modified":"2018-09-19T12:42:36","modified_gmt":"2018-09-19T11:42:36","slug":"abacus","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/hub.salford.ac.uk\/accessibleaudio\/accessible-audio-research\/abacus\/","title":{"rendered":"ABACus: Accessible Broadcast Audio Customisation"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1>What is ABACus (in under three minutes)?<\/h1>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Salford University   Lauren Ward\" width=\"584\" height=\"329\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/xtuq5h_JZPw?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>This talk was given as part of the University of Salford&#8217;s 3 Minute Thesis Competition (SPARC 2017)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Project Description<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/rd\/blog\/2013-05-object-based-approach-to-broadcasting\">Object-based broadcasting<\/a> presents a big leap forward in broadcast technology, giving the end-user the ability to customise their broadcast experience. One way in which this experience can be customised is through the ability to adjust the volume of different broadcast elements, like dialogue, sound effects or music, in their own home. For hard of hearing listeners, this ability to alter the sound levels based on personal hearing requirements has the potential to significantly improve the clarity and accessibility of broadcast audio. However, t<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">o ensure end-users receive full benefit from this technology development of effective and easy to use tools, based on an understanding of user needs, is essential. This project is working to develop such tools.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The project has a particular focus on investigating how sounds relevant to the narrative of the broadcast content, like foreground sound effects, affect how easily dialogue is understood. The project has shown that relevant sound effects can almost double normal hearing listeners&#8217; ability to understand dialogue, when there is competing noise. This is not the case for all hard of hearing listeners.
