Adoption Identities and Narratives

09:00 – 13:00, Friday 22nd July 2016

This MRC event will focus on the important and sometimes contentious issue of adoption in England and Wales. We are very pleased that Professor Beth Neil has agreed to provide the keynote based on her thorough and extensive research into the area and international standing. Jo Ward from Nottingham Trent University will be presenting a paper discussing the journey from infertility to adoption. Other speakers from the University of Salford include: Joe Smeeton who will be presenting a discussion paper on the viability of adoption in light of current case law and debate; Steve Myers who will be presenting empirical work on ‘How prospective adopters consider taking ‘hard to place’ children’; and Lucy Ryan who will present her current research, which involves exploring how adoptive parents transition to parenthood; what practices they use, how their identities are formed and reformed and how they find (or don’t find) social support systems.
