EVENT: Understanding Abuse in Sport and Safeguarding Children

Friday 24th March 2017, 12:30 – 17:00

MediaCityUK, University of Salford

This event will explore the relationship between abuse and children’s participation within sport. Its backdrop is the ongoing inquiry into child sexual abuse within institutional settings and the recent disclosures of historical abuse within professional football.

It will seek to widen the debate about safeguarding children in sport, by drawing upon research and first-hand accounts from professional and community settings.   Jameel Hadi will explore the ‘invisibility of the child’ and safeguarding within sport:  Chris Green will share his study into junior academies within professional football;  Natalia Farmer provides an account based on her experience within junior elite tennis,  of how cultures of silence and complicity exist in relation to abuse in sport; Gloria Viseras,  the former Olympic gymnast,  will speak about her experience as a survivor of child sexual abuse and the tension between sport and child welfare.

The event will draw on wider research, investigations and first-hand accounts from community and professional provision, team and individual sport and will be of interest to professionals and people involved in the community, who have a responsibility to safeguard and promote the welfare of children using sport and activities.
